I have given up entirely and now say it is like a very long crime film that you are in, and then change the subject before anyone asks a follow up lol
The honest version is that it is a place you go and it becomes yours, and that sounds insane out loud, so nobody says it lol
adding to my own post: my second attempt was its a story about two people who want a normal life and are very bad at getting one, and that landed much better
That reaction is correct though. Mostly you drive around and listen to the radio is an accurate description of about sixty of the eighty hours.
the driving part is what breaks it. you cannot explain to a non gamer why eighty hours of driving is the good bit

I describe it as a place rather than a game. You go to a state and things happen there. That is closer to how it actually feels and it does not sound absurd.
