Running the actual numbers on the map size claim

Rockstar said Vice City is roughly twice Los Santos, and the full map is about three times RDR2's. People are treating those as the same claim and they are not.

RDR2's playable area is commonly put around 75 square km. Three times that is somewhere near 225. GTA V's whole map including the countryside is usually estimated around 75 to 80 as well, with Los Santos proper being a fraction of it.

So the city being double Los Santos does not mean the city is huge relative to the state. It means the state is enormous and the city is a dense chunk of it. Those are very different games to play.

To answer my own question with the cleanest version: the state is roughly triple RDR2, the city is roughly double Los Santos, and those two facts together tell you the countryside is doing an enormous amount of the work. That is the RDR2 lesson applied to a GTA.

Density over size. Every studio that chased raw square km made an empty game. Rockstar is one of about two that has never had that problem

Worth adding that a lot of that RDR2 area was mountain and snow you crossed once. Square kilometers are a bad unit for open worlds. Minutes of interesting travel would be better and nobody measures that.

If the countryside is doing that much work then the national park is not a side area, it is a third of the game. That changes my expectations completely.
