Coming back after skipping the whole GTA Online era, what did I miss (7)

Second attempt at asking this, the first one went nowhere.

I finished V in 2013 and never touched Online. Is there anything from those eleven years of updates that I should know about before VI, or is the single player story completely its own thing.
