My brother wants to play it when I get it and he has never used a controller for anything more complicated than a football game.
What is the realistic way to hand one of these to somebody? Do you let them drive around for an hour, do you put them in a mission, or is the honest answer that they need to start with something smaller?

let them drive. thats it. an hour of driving with the radio on and no objective and they will either get it or they wont

That is much simpler than what I was planning, which involved explaining the wanted system first for some reason.
putting a new player in a mission is how you make them think its a shooting game, which it is not, and then they bounce off it
Do not explain anything. Hand it over, say the map is in the phone, and leave the room. Every explanation you give is a thing they now have to remember lol
The controller thing sorts itself out in about twenty minutes if nobody is watching. It does not sort itself out at all if somebody is lol
leave the room is genuinely the best advice in this thread and it applies to teaching anyone anything
