Rereading Jason's bio for what is probably the fortieth time

Grew up around grifters and crooks. Ended up working for drug runners in the Keys. Meeting Lucia may be the best or the worst thing that ever happened to him.

What gets me now is the word ended up. Not chose, not turned to, not became. Ended up. Passive construction in a two sentence biography, and it is the only verb in there describing something he did.

That is the whole character. A man things happen to, meeting a woman who makes things happen.
