the liberty city line is the only link to the old games and i think thats the point

lucia's mother has been dreaming of the good life since their days in liberty city. thats it. thats the entire connection between this game and everything that came before it

no cameos, no shared characters, no callback missions. one sentence establishing that this family came from somewhere else and did not get what they came for

using an entire twenty five year old fictional universe to say a family moved south and it did not work out is the most restrained thing rockstar has ever done

Reading this after the reveal and it lands even harder... the whole game is about wanting a specific ordinary life and the reference is to the place they left to get it.

It is also the only connection that requires nothing of the player. You can have played every previous game or none and that sentence works identically.

Using twenty five years of shared universe to say a family moved south and it did not work out is a genuinely restrained choice and I had not framed it that way.
