What is Leonida supposed to be as a name

The state is called Leonida. Florida, Leonida. One letter group swapped and the rhythm is identical, which is the same trick as San Andreas being a plausible sounding place that is not a place.

What I cannot work out is whether it is meant to read as a Spanish or Italian derived name, which would fit the region, or whether it is purely a phonetic joke on Florida and nothing more. Has anyone seen an explanation, or is this one of those things they will never comment on?

No explanation has ever been given and I would be surprised if one was. San Andreas was never explained either.

The phonetic reading is the obvious one. Leonida scans identically to Florida and it sounds like a place, which is the whole requirement.

Liberty City, San Andreas, Vice City, Leonida. Only one of those is subtle and it is the new one.

leonida is a real greek name and there is a town in florida with a greek name for no reason anyone can explain, so it tracks

The trick with all these names is that they have to survive being said out loud a thousand times without becoming annoying. Leonida does. Half the fan suggestions from before the reveal did not.

Coming to this late: Vice City is the least subtle place name in fiction and it has aged perfectly, so subtlety may not be the metric.
