Ocean Beach in daylight is not what I expected and I mean that as a compliment

I had built up a picture over three years of what a modern Ocean Beach would look like and I had it wrong. I was expecting the 2002 palette with better lighting.

What they have made is somewhere that looks lived in and a bit worn. The art deco is still there but it has forty more years of sun on it and there are cheap shops between the good buildings. That is what actually happens to a strip like that.

It is less of a postcard and more of a place. I did not know I wanted that until I saw it.

the cheap shops between the good buildings is the thing. every real strip like that has a phone repair place next to something beautiful

I have not played a game in fifteen years and my daughter showed me this footage... I recognised the street shape before I recognised anything else.

This is the difference between building a place and building a set. Sets do not have phone repair shops in them.

Forty more years of sun on it is exactly right... that is the detail I could not articulate and it is why it looks correct rather than nostalgic.
